The engineered vs. solid hardwood answer

When homeowners are researching their wood flooring options, there is always the question of engineered vs. solid hardwood. Both are real wood floors, and both offer that classical elegance that comes with this floor covering. However, there are some differences you’ll likely want and need to know about.

The differences between these two materials may make a difference in your shopping for a new floor covering, and then again, it may not. However, to have you be more educated about the base characteristics of each, we will share them with you here, for your consideration.

Engineered vs. solid hardwood flooring questions answered

Solid hardwood flooring is exactly as it sounds. It’s real wood, all the way through. It offers a lifespan of about 100 years and provides many options for personalization, including species and stain color choices, and a variety of finish options. While it’s perfect for a variety of spaces, it cannot be installed in spaces that are below ground level. You can visit our showroom today to see the differences in person.

Engineered hardwood flooring also offers species, stain, and finish options, but you have fewer than with solid wood. The real wood comes in veneer form and is attached to layers of plywood that form the backing layer. A wear layer is placed on top to protect against wear and water spots, making it very durable as well.

The biggest difference between these two materials is that engineered flooring can be installed below grade without worrying about dampness, humidity, or temperature changes. No expansion gaps are necessary, and you even have a degree of water resistance if messes are cleaned up quickly. You can even refinish engineered wood flooring, just as you can with solid wood, but the number of times this is possible is dependent upon the thickness of the real wood veneer.
